There are records of masquerades in Santa Cruz since the 18th century. The first contests with prizes in this record are the rondalla contests of 1925. A group that sings, with humour and criticism, lyrics about current affairs accompanied by whistles and percussion. The adult murga contest is the most popular event of the Santa Cruz Carnival; there is also a children's murga contest.
Comparsas dance and play Brazilian and Latin rhythms with batucada, and also compete in the Rhythm and Harmony parade. Musical groups perform salsa, merengue and Caribbean rhythms on stage.
At the Grand Queen Election Gala the candidates, sponsored by companies and institutions, parade in costumes several metres tall created by local designers. A jury chooses the Queen and her four Maids of Honour. There are also galas for the Children's Queen and the Senior Queen.
