The 1996 Carnival at a glance

The 1996 Carnival belongs to the “Modern Carnival” period of the festival's history. Since 1976: the Carnival gets its name back and becomes a mass celebration. Its theme was “México Lindo”. The official poster is the work of Elena Lecuona. The Queen's Election Gala was held at Recinto Ferial, directed by Eduardo Bazo with stage design by Momo Marrero.

The 1996 Carnival Queen was Nayra Plasencia Jorge with the costume “Ra”, designed by Justo Gutiérrez, representing Almacenes El Kilo. Her court was completed by 10 Maids of Honour. Other crowns that year: Children's Queen: Diana María Rodríguez González and Senior Queen: Mª. Carmen Pérez Meneses.

In Adult murgas, Afilarmónica Triqui-Traques won first prize in Performance (its 4th title, 2 in a row), ahead of Los Mamelucos and Los Diablos Locos. In Children's murgas, Los Melositos won first prize in Performance (its first title), ahead of Los Bambas and Los Sofocados. In Comparsas, Los Tabajaras won first prize in Performance (its 2nd title; its first win since 1990), ahead of Los Joroperos and Los Rumberos. In Rondallas and lyrical groups, Orfeón La Paz won first prize in Performance (its 22nd title, 4 in a row), ahead of Coral Anaga and Gran Tinerfe. In Musical groups, Caña Dulce won first prize in Performance (its 7th title, 7 in a row), ahead of Chaxiraxi and Guarapo. In Children's costume contest, Carla Rodríguez González won first prize in Individual women's, ahead of Tania Hernández Sánchez and Jéssica Madrigal Hernández. In Float contest, Carroza won first prize in Float contest, ahead of Carroza and Carroza Paraíso del Carnaval. In Decorated cars, Las chicas locas regresan del espacio won first prize in Decorated car contest, ahead of Cucaracha veloz and Pesquero Cabello y Cabrera.
