The 1998 Carnival at a glance

The 1998 Carnival belongs to the “Modern Carnival” period of the festival's history. Since 1976: the Carnival gets its name back and becomes a mass celebration. Its theme was “La Edad Media”. The official poster is the work of Miguel Arocha. The Queen's Election Gala was held at Recinto Ferial, directed by Francis Suáres y Geni Afonso with stage design by Justo Gutierrez.

The 1998 Carnival Queen was Natalia Castilla Bermúdez with the costume “Miss Saigón”, designed by Leovid Canarias, representing Almacenes El Kilo. Her court was completed by 10 Maids of Honour. Other crowns that year: Children's Queen: Saray Elvira García and Senior Queen: Mercedes Martín Rodríguez.

In Adult murgas, Los Singuangos won first prize in Performance (its 6th title; its first win since 1993), ahead of Afilarmónica Ni Pico-Ni Corto and Los Diablos Locos. In Children's murgas, Los Chinchositos won first prize in Performance (its 5th title, 2 in a row), ahead of Los Chiripitifláuticos and Los Mamelones. In Comparsas, Tropicana won first prize in Performance (its 2nd title, 2 in a row), ahead of Los Joroperos and Los Valleiros. In Rondallas and lyrical groups, Gran Tinerfe won first prize in Performance (its 9th title, 2 in a row), ahead of Orfeón La Paz and Unión Artística El Cabo. In Musical groups, Nobleza Canaria won first prize in Performance (its first title), ahead of Chaxiraxi and Caña Dulce. In Children's costume contest, Iris Hernández Sicilia won first prize in Individual women's, ahead of Haridiam Rodríguez and María Hernández. In Float contest, Carroza Paraíso del Carnaval won first prize in Float contest, ahead of Carroza and Carroza. In Decorated cars, Castillo medieval won first prize in Decorated car contest, ahead of Los indios en familia and Lechera de Los Gladiolos.
