The 2008 Carnival at a glance

The 2008 Carnival belongs to the “Modern Carnival” period of the festival's history. Since 1976: the Carnival gets its name back and becomes a mass celebration. Its theme was “La Magia”. The official poster is the work of Juan Galarza. The Queen's Election Gala was held at Parque Marítimo, directed by Jaime Azpilicueta with stage design by Carlos Sáenz.

The 2008 Carnival Queen was Nauzet Celeste Cruz with the costume “La edad de oro”, designed by Santi Castro, representing Centro Comercial Carrefour. Her court was completed by 10 Maids of Honour. Other crowns that year: Children's Queen: Lizett Ramos Pérez and Senior Queen: Conchita Hernández Marrero.

In Adult murgas, Afilarmónica Triqui-Traques won first prize in Performance (its 6th title; its first win since 2006), ahead of Los Diablos Locos and Afilarmónica Ni Pico-Ni Corto. In Children's murgas, Los Pita Pitos won first prize in Performance (its first title), ahead of Los Rebeldes and Los Triqui-Traquitos. In Comparsas, Los Cariocas won first prize in Performance (its 9th title, 2 in a row), ahead of Los Rumberos and Danzarines Canarios. In Rondallas and lyrical groups, Orfeón La Paz won first prize in Performance (its 32nd title, 10 in a row), ahead of Masa Coral Tinerfeña and Lírico Coral Los Aceviños. In Musical groups, Chaxiraxi won first prize in Performance (its 4th title; its first win since 2005), ahead of Salsarengue and Sabor Isleño. In Song of Laughter, No tengo el chichi p'a farolillos won first prize in Performance, ahead of Somos así and Los superhéroes. In Children's costume contest, Laura Perdomo Melián won first prize in Individual women's, ahead of Andrea García Grela. In Float contest, Carroza de Jesús Domingo Sabina Santana Las Chafiras won first prize in Float contest, ahead of Carroza de Víctor Pérez e hijos and Carroza de María Cerdeña Paraíso del Carnaval. In Decorated cars, Pedro Armas Febles won first prize in Decorated car contest, ahead of José L. León and José Alberto Ramos.
