The 2009 Carnival at a glance

The 2009 Carnival belongs to the “Modern Carnival” period of the festival's history. Since 1976: the Carnival gets its name back and becomes a mass celebration. Its theme was “El Terror”. The official poster is the work of Gonzalo Luis Álvarez Fernández. The Queen's Election Gala was held at Recinto Ferial, directed by Jaime Azpilicueta.

The 2009 Carnival Queen was Ana María Tavárez Mata with the costume “Embrujada”, designed by Leo Martínez, representing Periódico El Día. Her court was completed by 10 Maids of Honour. Other crowns that year: Children's Queen: Daida Rodríguez García and Senior Queen: María del Carmen Medina Afonso.

In Adult murgas, Afilarmónica Triqui-Traques won first prize in Performance (its 7th title, 2 in a row), ahead of Los Bambones and Los Diablos Locos. In Children's murgas, Los Triqui-Traquitos won first prize in Performance (its 7th title; its first win since 2004), ahead of Los Rebeldes and Los Guachipanduzy. In Comparsas, Los Joroperos won first prize in Performance (its 8th title; its first win since 2003), ahead of Los Cariocas and Danzarines Canarios. In Rondallas and lyrical groups, Orfeón La Paz won first prize in Performance (its 33rd title, 11 in a row), ahead of Unión Artística El Cabo and Lírico Coral Los Aceviños. In Musical groups, Chaxiraxi won first prize in Performance (its 5th title, 2 in a row), ahead of Salsarengue and Caña Dulce. In Song of Laughter, No tengo el chichi p'a farolillos won first prize in Performance, ahead of Familia Monster and Somos así. In Children's costume contest, Laura Perdomo Melián won first prize in Individual women's, ahead of Carlota Bibiana Melio García and Jacqueline Norah Sosa García. In Float contest, Carroza "Telarañas" -Tf-3320 C won first prize in Float contest, ahead of Carroza "Las vampiresas del Carnaval" -Tf-3499 G and Carroza "La moradita del maléfico" Gc-9624 Au. In Decorated cars, Mira quien baila won first prize in Decorated car contest, ahead of Bomberos potentes and Guardias civiles de María Jiménez. 10 años.
